Portimao – Algarve

Portimao – Algarve

Transfer time – 60 minutes

Portimao is the largest town in the Western Algarve and sits in a beautiful spot on the Arade River opposite the historical village of Ferragudo. Portimao’s beach located on the Atlantic is also known as Praia Da Rocha, which has actually become a fabulous resort in its own right. Portimao is a nice mixture of old and new with early 19th century buildings in the old town and stunning high rise hotels and apartment blocks in the newer part of the town.

Portimao is set slightly inland, hence the main beach being located in neighbouring Praia Da Rocha. The beach is wonderful, soft golden sand gently shelving into the crystal azure waters of the Atlantic, perfect for little ones to paddle and fantastic for scuba diving and fishing. The port and harbour area are wonderful places to sit back, enjoy a coffee and watch this busy little resort bring in the catch of the day and watch the many boat trips going in and out.

The night life is most probably the busiest in the Algarve, with plenty bars and pubs to enjoy a drink, many offers and happy hours on offer. Eating out is a dream, especially for seafood lovers, with the restaurants located throughout this resort enjoying the local’s catch of the day. All tastes are catered for with a massive choice of international and local menus in the restaurants, and there are many fast food outlets too. For a more relaxed side of Portimao, wander down to the river front, enjoy the Manuel Biver, gardens where you can sit out and enjoy a quiet meal or drink.

Shopping in Portimao is excellent, with retail parks and shopping malls, there’s even a Primark!! However for the local crafts and souvenirs, there are plenty local craft shops and even a weekly market, so plenty places to pick up a bargain.

Portimao is perfectly situated to get out and about and see more of this beautiful destination, and boat trips are a great way of exploring this coastline and relatively cheap too. There a local racing circuit just outside the town and a great night out for all, young and old.

So much to do and see in Portimao, it’s no wonder people return here year after year!
