Ferragudo – Algarve

Ferragudo – Algarve

Transfer Time – 50 Minutes

Ferragudo is a much smaller, more traditional Portuguese resort than its larger neighbour of Portimao. Once a working fishing village makes this area a perfect base for those wanting a more unique holiday. Rumour has it that Ferragudo is going to be The Algarve’s number once resort in the not to distant future.

Many of the houses in Ferragudo are traditional fishermen’s homes; white washing quaint little homes with locals sitting watching the world go by. Many are built precariously into the hillside and make a dramatic backdrop to this stunning resort.

Ferragudo Town has many beautiful gardens, palm trees and other wonderful flora and forna, and the main village is along a pretty river road. Once in the village square there are beautiful cobbled streets with wonderful outdoor cafes serving delicious pastries and freshly ground coffee. For those fish lovers, the quayside restaurants offer some of the worlds most amazing shellfish and seafood, caught fresh that day. Barbeques are another popular feature in many of these towns’ eateries, and the smell is just amazing as you wander through this village.

The beach is a wonderful place to laze away your days, with miles of softly shelving golden sand and plenty sun loungers and umbrellas. The Algarve is famous for its wonderful beaches and Ferragudo is no exception.

Nightlife is relaxed and laid back with plenty bars and cafes to enjoy a drink, definitely not a place for the young and lively, but perfect for families and couples wanting to experience Portugal at its best.

This resort is steeped in history, with the Fort of Sao Joao de Arcade which began its existence as a look out tower in the 15th century and the was extended in the 17th century to protect the mouth of the river, with the Fort of Santa Katarina protecting the banks of the river on the opposite side. Only a short drive to neighbouring resorts makes this a great destination of people from all walks of life.
