Madeira offers various resorts the main one being the capital Funchal meaning the Pearl of the Ocean which when you visit the area you will understand why. With its bars, restaurants and cafes lining the cobbled streets in which you can while away the days sampling the local cuisine and wine. If you have enjoyed the wine then a trip to a wine lodge to learn Madeiras age old wine making secrets is a must. The seafood restaurants at the harbour are a delight and well worth a visit.

For a more cultural outlook then why not visit one of the many museums or the magnificent Se Cathedral. No matter where you go within the town you will be taken away with the exotic bloom of jasmine and bougainvillea that line the roads all the way up to the mountains. From Funchal Old Town you can take a cable car to Monte village and the views are fantastic, getting back down is just as easy in one of the wicker toboggan’s.

The evenings can be spent at your own pace either sampling one of the many bars or enjoying the entertainment that your hotel provides. For the more adventurous then the Casino is a good bet if your feeling lucky.

There are no beaches as such in Madeira but most of the hotels come with their own swimming pools and offer panoramic views as the majority are built into the cliffs. There are various Lidos that are worth a visit for a change of scene.
