Lixouri – Kefalonia

Transfer Time – 1 hour 30 minutes

Best For – Those wanting to experience traditional Greek village life.

Lixouri has got to be the most beautiful, tranquil resort on this stunning island. Once ruined by a huge earthquake, it has been lovingly rebuilt brick by brick and the winding streets and its laid back way of life makes this a perfect location for a relaxing holiday.

The beach in Lixouri is fairly limited, there is a small beach, with soft sand and clear, shallow waters and plenty sun loungers and parasols for hire. There are bigger resorts a short bus ride or water taxi away with more choice of water sports and beach front cafés and tavernas. Daytime for those not worried about a beach can be spent wandering around the maze of little cobbled streets, taking in the shops and souvenir shops, the historical library and traditional bars and tavernas.

Evenings are generally spent on one of the local tavernas and enjoying local wine and fine food. There are a few international restaurants offering chines for example, however the more traditional taverna is best. They offer local produce, local wine or ouzo and even some entertainment in the form of Greek dancing and occasional plate smashing, great fun.!!! For those wanting a more livelier night-life, you can hop on a water taxi over to the islands capital of Argostoli, where the choices are places to wine, dine and shop are much more and is definitely worth a visit.

For beach lovers, Lixouri is perfectly placed, and although it doesn’t have the largest beach, the islands best beaches are easily reached. Lassi reached by a short water taxi, has one of the islands best beaches with a huge selection of water sports for the more energetic and a lovely selection of beach front tavernas and cafés to get out of the midday sun.

There are many places worth a visit whilst staying in Kefalonia, We have touched on Argostoli, the islands capital, neighbouring Lassi with its perfect beach. Anyone who comes here should take a boat trip, and experience some of the islands prettiest resorts and beaches only reached by boat, not to mention the possibilities of seeing some amazing and rare wild life, its common to spot dolphin, logger head turtles and monk seals, and going inland with car hire you may spot Golden Osprey, wild mountain ponies and other protected species, totally breathtaking I’m sure you’ll admit.

Horse riding, scuba diving, water parks and the many historical spots offer everything you could want in a summer holiday and more. Give Kefalonia a go, many people return here year after year and its no surprise why.
